As a pet owner, it’s important to use pet-safe cleaners for floors and countertops. It’s estimated that dogs can smell anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 times better than people. A cat’s sense of smell is nine to 16 times as strong as humans! If you’re sensitive to your current cleaning products, imagine how your fur friend is feeling.  Even scents from diffused essential oils can be harmful to your pet.

If your four-legged roommate longs for smothering itself on the floor to keep cool during hot summer months, curl up by your feet during the winter or is known to lick up a crumb or two off the floor or countertops, it’s time to start thinking about pet-safe cleaners.

But first, let’s start with being in the know about harsh ingredients we want to avoid. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) has created a helpful guide to help you clean safely and responsibly. One of the best ways to make sure your pet is safe from any type of cleaning product is to make sure the products are safely stored in hard to access storage areas, such as high shelves or cabinets with a lock or latch.

The ASPCA also warns pet owners of the potential harms of essential oils when used in its 100% form, noting, “In their concentrated form (100%), essential oils can absolutely be a danger for pets. Dogs and cats who have either walked through oils, gotten some on their coat, or had oils placed directly on them can develop health concerns.” Essential oils are typically stored in glass bottles, which means pet owners need to be extra diligent about replacing the oil bottles in cabinets or a storage area where a counter-walking cat can’t accidentally knock it over, causing it to break.

Now that we know what to avoid and how to keep our pets safe from cleaners and oils, here’s the scoop when considering a new cleaning product:

The Humane Society recommends reading labels carefully to check the ingredients and follow use instructions exactly. Watch out for ingredients such as ammonia, alcohol, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, phthalates, and chemical compounds that contain the word “phenol.” To take the guesswork out of trying to figure out if a product is pet-safe, choose brands that are clear about their use of non-toxic and pet-safe ingredients, even better, look for the Safer Choice label.

With Infuse, you won't have to worry about harmful chemicals, because all of our lightly scented cleaners are non-toxic and formulated using only CleanGredients. And the fragrance components used in each of our products is limited to no more than 0.01%.
